Picking a wedding photographer isn’t easy. You’re trusting a person to capture images from one of the most important days of your–and you’re giving them a lot of money. Finding a good photographer and then deciding to book with them can be a nerve-racking process. Here are some things to think about when trying to pick a good wedding photographer:
Look at this person’s website or sample book and see if you like their photography style. Are they have an artsy flair or serious documentary style? Just at first glance, do you like it or not. If you don’t, move on and don’t even investigate more.
Price is an easy way to get rid of a few of your options. There are lots of photographers you might like, but you might not be able to afford them. Go ahead and toss out the ones that are totally out of your price range.
Contact a few photographers that are your top choices from the ones who made it past the first two rounds of cuts. See which ones are available and start to get a feel for their personalities.
Go ahead and meet the photographer in person. You will spend a lot of time on your big with this person and you want him/her to be somebody you get along with. If this person feels pushy and you don’t like pushy, don’t work with them. On the flip side, if you want direction from a professional on your big day, don’t hire somebody passive. Again, GO WITH YOUR GUT on this one.
What You Get for the Money
Now that you have a few favorites worked out, read the contracts for each person carefully. See what you get with each person or company. Do you get two photographers for 7 hours of coverage or are you getting one photographer for 4 hours? Rates and options vary from photographer to photographer. Also, the number of images you get and the RIGHTS to those images are important. Make sure you are receiving a good number of pictures and are going to be able to use them in the manors you wish later.
When you pick your wedding photographer, you’re going to want to make sure you are picking somebody you’re comfortable with. If you have any doubts, find somebody else. There are many, many photographers out there so you can be choosy. Please, if you DO find somebody you really like, book with them right away. You don’t want to lose out on your dream photographer.
