When it comes to self-storage companies, there are always many offers, promotions and deals that are put in place to entice new customers. While there are a great many offers that could save you money, there are some traps to be wary of if you’re new to the idea of renting a self-storage unit. There are many things to think about when you’re deciding on the right storage space for you, and there are things you need to be wary of if you’re searching for the right place for the right price.

When looking for a storage space, there are many factors you should take into consideration before renting a unit. (Photo courtesy of Grace Bailey)

1)      Price.

When you begin the hunt for a self-storage space, one of the most important things to consider is the price. Devise your budget carefully so you know that you’re going to be able to afford the payments. Once you have a rough idea of your budget then you can begin the hunt. Don’t be sucked in by cheap deals – make sure you’re calculating the annual cost as well as the monthly and be aware of hidden fees, costs and price hikes. Some companies will offer you a set number of months at a set cost, only to increase the price exponentially after this period is over. Do you research so you don’t get caught out and end up paying more than you expected.

2)      Location.

One of the best ways to save on the cost of renting a storage space is to find one in a non-commercial area. Self-storage spaces in the city tend to be a lot more expensive to rent as they’re more in-demand. If you’re not planning to visit your storage space on a regular basis then try looking a little further out to find a good deal. However, if you do plan on travelling to and from your storage space (for example, if you plan on using it as an office) then think carefully about the cost of petrol and transport. It could be that hiring a place a little out of the way could end up costing you more money in travel expenses!

3)      Space.

If you’re trying to save money on self-storage then try to calculate the minimum amount of space you’re going to require. Think carefully about what you’re planning to store there and consider how likely you are to use the space for other things. Don’t pay extra for space you’re not going to need or use. Though it’s important to not over-spend, it’s also important you make sure you’re not going to be hiring a place that isn’t big enough – this is such as much a waste of money – if not more so!

4)      Payment plans.

You might find that paying annually for your storage-space is more cost-effective than paying monthly. Though this isn’t the case for all self-storage companies, it is the case for some. Make sure you calculate exactly what you’re going to paying so you can avoid being surprised by hidden costs and fees.

5)      Extras.

Some self-storage facilities provide extras such as wireless internet access or telephone points. If you’re going to require something like this then make sure it’s included in the price, or is being offered for a reasonable amount. Alternatively, if you aren’t going to be using amenities like these then make sure you’re not paying extra for them!
